Setting aside the blissful vacation, a vibrant group of 19 youth from across Gujarat came together at Jeevan Vikas Kendra, Pethapur, Gandhinagar from 11th to 16th May 2009 for the Discipleship Training Program.

The program comprised of several interesting features like interactive sessions, AV presentations, meaningful Mass and inspiring Adorations. The first three days were a time of silent retreat where participants went through a time of purification and anointing by the Holy Spirit in the guidance of Rajan Uncle. While the days followed, they had training by Babychayan who through his talks imbibed in them Christ-centered values and JY lifestyle. Now reaching the crucial part of the training, the participants had brainstorming sessions by the core team. Anish Devasia, the DTP co-ordinator, focused on Lectio Divina and Self-Awareness. He along with Richard also enlightened the participants on the influence media has on the youth of today. Fr. Siby gave a comprehensive talk on Vocations clarifying many misconceptions. We were joined by Byju Chetan who acquainted the participants with the JY movement.

The program was pillared by strong intercession, co-ordinated by Clayton and supported by volunteers and families of Gandhinagar. The food ministry under the care of Fr. Siby did an exceptional job by providing all with wholesome meals. We were blessed with the presence of Rt. Rev. Stanislaus Fernandes, Archbishop of Ahmedabad Diocese who celebrated Mass on the last day of the program and commissioned the participants to answer their missionary call.

All in all it was a grace filled program empowering the youth to transform the world in them and around them.

TESTIOMONIES

Jaya says:
“Praise the Lord! The word 'wonderfull' seems just a fraction of how I found the DTP. The division into 3 days retreat and 3 days training made more effect than a complete 6 days retreat. The last 3 days were more like implementing what the former days taught. Helped me know better what Christ followers ought to be like. Has brought me more closer to His word and is taking effect in changing my life. And not forgetting the wonderfull people(participants and volounteers) who are now part of my ‘Jesus Friends.’ Would definitely advocate DTPs to others.”

Arnold says:
“I experienced the presence and love of God. I got closer to his love and care.”

GROWTH RETREAT-09

Jesus youth of Gujarat experienced a long awaited growth retreat in English for all the members of the movement from 21st through 23rd of February, 2009. This retreat indeed proved to be a great blessing in many ways by bringing us closer to the lord. With about 40 people participating from Ahmedabad, Baroda and Anand, it was conducted at Jeevan Dham Ashram, Baroda. The participants including Service team members, Prayer Groups and Ministry members. The retreat led by Santvana Community members Santhosh and Sali JC, and Jancy from Agra. It was a time of awakening and getting reconciled with God and one another, aptly just before entering into the season of lent. Various methods of prayer including Lectio Divina, Forgiveness method were practically taught to enrich and deepen ourselves in faith.

“For I will gather you from all the nations and bring you back to your own land. Then I shall pour pure water over you and you shall be made clean – cleansed from the defilement of all your idols. I shall give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you. I shall put my spirit within you and move you to follow my decrees and keep my laws.” Ezekiel 36:24

A brief reflection by Sali of what truly one looks for, JOY, Happiness. Joy lying in not doing certain things but being a state of mind and being in union with the lord. The talks gave us a realization that we all have sinned and the wage of Sin being death and a deeper understanding that through Jesus, we have forgiveness of sins, and whoever believes in him is freed of everything from which we could not be freed by the Law of Moses. Hence, once again getting back the grace, life everlasting through Jesus Christ.

“You could be wrong in this regard because you understand neither the scriptures nor the power of God” Mark 12:24

Santhosh JC taught us a VERY ANCIENT art, practiced at one time by all Christians, is the technique known as lectio divina - a slow, contemplative praying of the Scriptures which enables the Bible, the Word of God, to become a means of union with God which we practically implemented in the coming days. Lectio Divina is
Latin for divine reading, spiritual reading, or "holy reading," and represents a traditional Christian practice of prayer and scriptural reading intended to engender communion with the Triune God and to increase in the knowledge of God's Word. It is a way of praying with Scripture that calls one to study, ponder, listen and, finally, pray and even sing and rejoice from God's Word.

Lectio Divina (Sacred Scripture) Method:

1. a) Determining the place and time – Selecting the place and time is important. The place to be free from distractions.
b) Reading a passage – 5 times aloud – By this cultivating the ability to listen deeply, to hear “with the ear of our hearts”. We should allow ourselves to become women and men who are able to listen for the still, small voice of God (I Kings 19:12); the “faint murmuring sound” which is God's word for us, God's voice touching our hearts. This gentle listening is an “atunement” to the presence of God in that special part of God's creation which is the Scriptures. We are listening for the still, small voice of God that will speak to us personally, but intimately.
2. Repeat the word/group of words that attracted you – 25-30 times aloud. ONCE WE have found a word or a passage in the Scriptures that speaks to us in a personal way, we must take it in and “ruminate” on it. The image of the ruminant animal quietly chewing its cud was used in antiquity as a symbol of the Christian pondering the Word of God as in the example of the Virgin Mary “pondering in her heart” what she saw and heard of Christ (Luke 2:19)
3. Meditating - Allowing God's word to become His word for us, a word that touches us and affects us at our deepest levels.

4. Pray - Prayer understood both as dialogue with God, that is, as loving conversation with the One who has invited us into His embrace; and as consecration, prayer as the priestly offering to God of parts of ourselves that we have not previously believed God wants. In this prayer we allow the word that we have taken in and on which we are pondering to touch and change our deepest selves.

5. Silence/Contemplation - FINALLY, WE simply rest in the presence of the One who has used His word as a means of inviting us to accept His transforming embrace. We practice silence, letting go of our own words; this time simply enjoying the experience of being in the presence of God

During the day there was confessions and counseling happening. Jancy explained the deep meaning and importance of Eucharist. Holy mass being a continuous praise and worship, a celebration of word, mystery of faith and an atoning sacrifice.

“All those who walk in the Spirit of God are Sons and Daughters of God” Roman 8:14

The final day began with Santhosh teaching us a method of Forgiveness which we can practice on a daily basis or as and when required.

Steps:

1. Speak - To speak to the person in our imagination about how we feel about the situation, words, hurt etc.

2. Listen – To listen to the other person, as to why he spoke or behaved in the particular way.

3. Reconciliation – a) Ask pardon
b) Pardon him/her

4. Cleansing – Cleanse by the blood of Jesus, my self, the person, circumstance, place.

5. Fill our self with love.

6. Victorious thanks.

Finally, we had sending forth, baptism of the Holy Spirit, laying of hands on each other.

T I M E

I knelt to pray but not for long,
I had too much to do.
I had to hurry and get to work
For bills would soon be due.
So I knelt and said a hurried prayer,
And jumped up off my knees.
My Christian duty was now done
My soul could rest at ease.
All day long I had no time
To spread a word of cheer.
No time to speak of Christ to friends,
They’d laugh at me I’d fear
No time, no time, too much to do,
That was my constant cry,
No time to give to souls in need
But at last the time, the time to die.
I went before the Lord!!!
I came, I stood with downcast eyes
For in His hands God held a book;
It was the book of life.
God looked into His book and said
“Your name I cannot find.
I once was going to write it down…
But never found the time.”

Thank you Lord! For Koinonia 2008

Praise the Lord! And let us from the very depths of our hear thank and praise the lord, for Koinonia-2008. Koinonia 2008 concluded on 29th October in the inimitable JY style amidst cheer of the action songs and the steely resolve of the participants to abandon everything to receive and accept Jesus into their lives. This wonderfully conducted programme, truly was and is a great gift from Jesus, to all of us. As we all know that from the very conception of the idea of a closed retreat , to the shifting of the idea to a day programme, and to its eventual successful completion, right from the arrangement of an apt venue to the availability of all resources and through the perseverance of recasting the entire dream in a different format, it surely was a great ride!!. Truly, we can say that it was " Against all odds" and a firm belief that our Lord is with us that we all could do it together. " Faith is the guarantee of the things we hope for and the certainty of the things that we do not see " (Hebrews 11:1) All of us clung to our faith in the Lords' ways and thus today, should feel greeted and elated by Our Lord himself " It was by their faith that our ancestors won God's approval "(Heb 11:2)

But each greeting and shower of mercy from the Lord comes with the "unputdownable" responsibility of being evangelists and fulfilling the call ‘HE’ gave to us in Mark 16: 15 " Then he told them ' Go out to the whole world and proclaim the Good news to all creation" And we know very well all that is associated with the call and the need to have a lifestyle befitting to the 'Kingdom of God’. The best example is the model of our Our Holy Mother Mary, who was greeted and assigned the greatest of all responsibility , that of bringing forth the Saviour to the world.

In our ministry for the youth, this is the opportune time. Once again being lifted up in faith in the Lord, let us work together, so that our cell groups, prayer groups, night vigils, adorations and each ministry, the barometers and reflections of our faith and the proof of our conversion, are filled with youth thirsting for the Lord alone. Let us concentrate well into the development of charisms enkindled through the infilling of the Holy Spirit our Helper, and from deep prayer and reflection. Let us lift up our ministries to the Lord's hands and ask his mercy and love to flow into each night vigil, each teens programme, each campus initiative, each music compositions and action song, each prayer meeting and everything that we do , so that the net result should be that it is the LORD who is being proclaimed and the same LORD being the master of all ceremonies/ministries/celebrations. " they praised God and won the favour of all the people. And everyday the Lord added to their number those who were being saved "
(Acts 2: 47)

Let us all open ourselves to the work of the Holy spirit, and together with our lifelong and lifestyles, rooted fully in Jesus, impact our ministries.

We as a ministry thank everybody who made Koinonia 2008 a great successes, our Pastor Binu George, and Our Bishop Thomas Macwan, deserve all our thankfulness. We lift up them, and all others to the lords hands and pray that, his heavenly showers of grace and mercy , keep outpouring in each of our lives.
In Jesus,
Byju Thomas
